Hello Beautiful Stranger

Stranger (Latin)- extraneus: foreign/external Foreign (Latin)- forās: outside/outdoors Together (Old English)- togadere: to gather Gather (Proto-West Germanic)- gadurōn: meaning to unite, to assemble, to bring parts of a whole closer together

Stemming from a Kizomba-inspired couples dance, two strangers are eager to communicate and soon discover the frames that hold this initial connection get queered into new postures and verticality dissolves into various trajectories that take them on an unpredictable ride. The strangers find themselves entangled in fantastical metamorphoses, spiraling into athletic choreographies, and confronted with the multiple strangers that exist within themselves. A chimerical, powerful creature takes shape and opens doors to the unknown.

What is a stranger? What is foreign inside of us?

What can we do together that we cannot do alone? How can we develop our sensitivity and capacity to receive the other?

the encounter

"With a foot, a nose, an elbow, a forehead, we get to know each other. With their fingertips they walks along my contours, they gently approaches this envelope that gives me shape. I feel that I'm pitching, I melt into the void to be picked up by their arms... By our arms?"

Deriving from different continents, living in different countries, and communicating in different languages, Jess and Kriss have found each other through dance. They met in 2022 in Berlin at a workshop and after their first improvisation they decided they would create a piece together! Through the creation of this work they are in real-time learning how to communicate, how to receive, and how to dance with the multiplicities of each other. The work is being made and developed through the course of visiting each others’ homes.

Hello Beautiful Stranger is currently in the creation process and to be premiered Fall 2024
